About The Project: Greater Austin, Texas

In 2003, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce retained Market Street Services to develop a holistic, long-term economic development strategy for the five-county Austin region.  The Chamber adopted Market Street’s key recommendations to serve as the foundation for its Opportunity Austin initiative, which aimed to rejuvenate the region’s economy by creating 72,000 new jobs and adding $2.9 billion to the regional payroll by 2008.  In 2006, Market Street returned to Greater Austin to conduct a mid-course review of strategic implementation progress.  The review found that the Chamber has made solid progress in implementation, often exceeding performance goals.  In fact, the Chamber recently announced that Opportunity Austin’s job creation numbers have been met two years ahead of schedule.

Now, in 2007, Market Street is again partnering with the Greater Austin Chamber, the City of Austin, Travis County and other regional governments to develop the next phase of the Opportunity Austin strategy.  The process builds from an understanding of Greater Austin’s current realities to an assessment of its current marketing programs and most promising local growth sectors, culminating in a best-practice strategy to best achieve results and an implementation plan to realize them.

At the end of this process, the Greater Austin Chamber and its partners will have a new “Taking It to the Next Level” Opportunity Austin strategy focused on the community’s most pressing needs and opportunities for the year 2007 forward, and the action steps and implementation guidelines necessary to achieve success.
